In light of our Nation's birthday and our joint fear of rednecks with fireworks, we decided to use our new-founded knowledge of the river eco-system and resume our patriotic celebrations in Howenwald, TN (Yeah, I never heard of it either) for some sweet canoeing action. The day was filled with margaritas, being launched into various snake/spider pits, tipping over, rope swings and exhausting exercise in the hot, southern sun. Much to our surprise we made it out with limbs intact and snake bite free.

So... is Luella over?

For the last year there has been a buzz around British Designer Luella Bartley who lost her financial backing due to the recession. Luella, who was named British designer of the year in 2008, announced she will not be able to send out her spring/summer 2010 collection which got raving reviews across the board at fashion week. Luella is and will always be one of my favorite designers. Her collections, even the ones from years ago, are timeless and always in fashion, regardless of the forcasted tend of the season. Luella speaks to the little girl inside all of us, from oversized pea-coats that look straight out of Audrey Hepburn's private collection, to peek-a-boo heart cut-outs on her classic cocktail dresses. Surely it's not the end for Bartley, but even going a season without a little Luella to perk up the racks is something to mourn over.

This isn't the first time I've raved about the French Brand Paul & Joe's beautiful cosmetic line. You might recognize their more commercial line, Paul & Joe Sister, which had a special run at Urban Outfitters last season. Created in France and based out of Japan, these super elusive cosmetics are definately one to covet. Paul & Joe first caught my eye when they collaborated with Disney to create a limited edition focused mainly around the furrier side of the Disney lineup,including lipsticks with the Aristocats and Lady and the Tramp. In honor of the recent recreation of "Alice in Wonderland," Paul and Joe are back with special packaging featuring our favorite curious heroine, Alice, in all of her original Disney Splendor. I've had the pleasure of using quite a few of these products in the past and I must say that from a makeup artist perspective, the line is worth every penny. Not only does the actual product hold up spec wise, but with packaging as pretty as this, who wouldn't want to take home a piece of their own?

I just about puked when I saw these new Jean-Michel Basquiat Reebok joints. Since all good things must ~~be capitilzed and choked until it is no longer breathing and/or valid~~ eventually end up floating into mainstream media, I must say I'm quite pleased with the finished product. For those of you who were born ~~in the south~~ (kidding!) Under a rock, Basquiat was a brilliant 20th century Neo-expressionist artist from Brooklyn who passed away in the late 80s.

His work is:

A. Everything that could be found in my nightmares as a child. OR
B. Filed the encyclopedia under "Is that called art or being bat-shit crazy?"

The Dumbo Octopus!

These charming deep sea octopus get their common name from their paired fins that look like elephant ears. They are found to considerable depths - one was sighted at 7,000m, the deepest depth of any cephalopod.

Watching the Dumbo Octopus swim is like watching a bird crossed with a pac-man ghost. It flaps its wings instead of jets around like it’s blue water cousins. It also has unnervingly human eyes, complete with what appears to be pink eye lids, whites, and irises. Their familiar eye just adds to their oddness though, as there is nothing else familiar about their face, and you can’t figure out which end is the front.

Fun fact: Unlike most of it's benthic brethren, The Dumbo Octopus swallows its prey whole.

Status: Extremely rare, and mostly misunderstood but not endangered.

Sometimes I wonder what it's like on the other side. I have chosen a path that revolves around my creative (and very vain) interests, such as beauty and art. I couldn't imagine living a very happy existence without being surrounded by such things at all times. But lately, and especially last night, I have been looking more into the other side of me. For the longest time I have had a constant battle with myself on whether or not to go back to school. I want to go, I yearn to immerse myself in knowledge and spend hours pouring over textbooks dedicated to things that stimulate my brain. Yet the other side of me, who is as stubborn as the day is long, tells me it's just not worth it, that I am happy being my own boss, and living, (for lack of better term) this "Bohemian" lifestyle.

Something that I feel like only a few people (stefanie) know about me is that I'm also freakishly obsessed with two other things: animals and tearing apart a person's psyche. I love animals. I love observing animals and studying their behavior because I believe that when we study them in their natural habitat, doing what seems to be silly animal things, that we are really studying ourselves, in the purest form.

With that being said, and with almost as much enthusiasm, I love studying people. Anthropology. History. Psychology. Why we do certain things/ why we feel certain things/how we react/what makes us tick/where we came from/evolution (that ultimately ties my two passions together)// and basically everything outside, around, and in between. If you know me, I always have some grand explanation of human behavior for you that probably just makes me sound like a cynical bitch. Well, no one said it better than *cringe* the bloodhound gang, "You and me baby ain't nothin' but mammals...

I've been eating very healthy for the last couple of months. I figure since I'm not quitting smoking anytime soon, I might as well take care of the rest of my body. This is normally a great thing for a girls figure. No greasy food or high fructose corn syrup is a sure fire way to look fit for the summer. (slowly but surely) it's starting to warm up again. I've been on the prowl for a shiny used bike to ride to work in the mornings. I'm so excited to finally have this option. I have always wanted to live close enough to bike almost everywhere I need to go. Since I have been so slammed lately I haven't had the time (or energy) to work out and whip my frumpy winter body back in shape. With a bike and only three blocks between my work and where I live I can kill two birds with one stone. Unless it's raining of course.

I don't care if CARLES (HR) has decided to turn his attention to mobile hipsters. Nothing wrong with being a "bike-alt." think being healthy/carbon footprint conscious isn't liek "s0000 zany" after all. Human after y'all.

spring also means changing my closet's color palette. I'm probably most excited for this. Following my love for Sophia Coppola, this season will be inspired by her and all of her beautiful films. Pastels, creams and for my own personal touch, a few primaries.

Finally starting to recover from a hellacious weekend. The whole week itself was hectic but Saturday in particular took the freaking cake. Saturday included moving into Amanda Lee's, A car wreck, four hours of Chuck E Cheese, Rescuing a brontosaurus in the rain and escorting him muddy through a packed house in a white dress, Kindercastle's EP release and staying up until 4 am with a few good friends.

That's where we are now, huh? We have become so spoiled by our modernized culture that we think school and working at clothing boutiques are soooo stressful they cause our precious, tiny underdeveloped brains to go into overload. We are so caught up with our social interactions and clothing, with our own "self-awareness" that we think life is like...so tough. jesuschrist. How would our grandparents respond to our "quarterlife crisis?" Sometimes it's hard to imagine what life was like for them. Working actual jobs...factories..military...shit that made you a man. Not sitting in a coffee shop pretending to be sooo busy.

Think about it. Let's break it down. Now correct me if I'm wrong and there are of course exceptions to this but, for the first 18 years of our lives we are taken care of by our parents. No rent, No buying groceries, probably no car payment, No bills.... So in three years you already want to throw in the towel, huh? Get your first taste of the "real world" and your ready to crawl back in the womb? "OMG I've almost graduated college and there are so many possibilities, how can I even DEAL right now?" Our parents must be so proud. Damn TV and playing Oregon Trail in school. Made reality so scary.

Let's talk about my obsessions for a moment.

I've started fine-tuning my ipod. This is a very difficult task as I am completely obsessed with music inside and out. Deleting songs and artists to me is kind of like letting a tiny piece of me die. Every single track on this device is linked to some memory, good or bad. I'm doing this though, because I have decided to become more strict on the music I allow to play in my free time. Now, my collection isn't perfect. I have random tracks here and there, and that also really bothers me. I also have things that I haven't bothered listening to since I first started using itunes. From this decision I have also decided to dedicate more attention to my dusty, dated vinyl collection. This is mostly because the majority of the music I long for isn't avalaible on the web or itunes.

My clothes are getting the same treatment. I'm moving into a place with no closet space so I have to work 3 rolling racks, a dresser packed to the brim, and countless storage boxes into the floor plan of my room. A little much, no? Watch your back, Local Honey, I'm coming for all of your store credit.

I also had another revelation. This morning as I was struggling to silence my alarm, I rolled over what I thought was an old bar rag soaked in nicotine. It was my hair. I gotta quit smoking. Smokers, do you even KNOW how bad we smell? It's awful. and gross. and bad for you. The worst part of this is even as I type out why I hate smoking and it's the most disgusting habit in the world, I find myself thinking,"man, I could really go for a smoke break right now..."

I am now a weekend Nanny. My job description just basically entails me hanging out with three precious little kids all weekend, doing various arts & crafts and playing pretty,pretty princess. I'm excited about bestowing all of my child-like tendencies on someone who can appreciate it (unicorns, make believe etc...) Plus the extra income doesn't hurt =)

I had a pleasant surprise when my lunch was delivered today! I love the new packaging that Heinz is doing, and each of five ketchup packets that were thrown in with my order were a different design. Here are my two faves:

Armed with Dragons of Eden and a double-shot soy latte, I began as what I knew was going to be a very long, boring day at the store. The sun has been playing peek-a-boo all afternoon and even though it's warmer today than usual, the foot-traffic through the 12Th South district is pretty much non-existent. Thankfully Ellie came by to keep me company and to wrap with me about the usual suspects (money, boys, spicy food...)

I feel as though I should make a comment about one or the other here, but I'll spare you the details.

Instead, let's talk about craigslist.
This website runs my world. I wake up in the morning and before I even think about checking any of my three social networks I immediately run my mouse to the top left of my browser and get my daily dose of madness. Starting with the M4W missed connections (vanity) and then to the M4M (humor) and finally ending with the W4W (curiosity). From there I cruise the job postings, the misc. free items section, and sometimes when I need a good laugh, I check the "best of" for any updates. I can spend hours on craigslist. It's such a grab-bag of people who post that the result is simply...intoxicating. I love reading the tech-savvy nerds battle it out with hillbillies on the forums. Its fun to imagine what some of these people look like, what they do in their day to day. In writing this I think I just realized how creepy I am.

I heard Leonard Cohen has been touring. Apparently his manager took him for all he was worth. What a shame. Mr. Cohen has and always will be one of my favorite artists. It's not even about his voice. The vivid pictures and scenarios he weaves in his songs haunt you. Leonard doesn't try to sway you with beautifully disguised lyrics or melodies. He's raw. His voice is shaky, whether he is singing out of his range or even just speaking. He makes you feel like you are sitting next to him in some shady, dimly-lit hole in the wall and he is pouring out his heart to you over a bottle of gin. Tales of Love lost and found. Of pain and happiness (mostly pain). He's been there. and now he's making you glad that you aren't him. Even though he wreaks of Stale Doral cigarettes and liquor, there is something strangely worldly and welcoming about him.

Leonard Cohen is the weathered traveller that you have read about in stories from your childhood, only in current times and much, much more real. No dragons, No damsels in distress. Just haggard from women and life. And now I guess his manager, too.

and that's why I love him so. If you ever find yourself stuck in a scenario that relates to matters of the heart (which they mostly always are) Go out and get this cd and play "Iodine." Then just sit back and let father Cohen shed some light on the situation for you.

I'm having boyfriend withdrawals. Damn you minimoog and your voodoo magic spells you put on Ross.

Mr. Eades posted this on Yewknee and I dedicated the rest of my evening to rewinding and playing this over and over.
